Sulfuric Acid

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4) is a strong mineral acid composed of sulfur, oxygen, and hydrogen elements. In higher concentrations, sulfuric acid is a clear, colorless to cloudy, oily liquid that has no odor.

Sulfuric acid, a very strong acid, is an oxidizing agent, and reacts readily at high temperatures with many metals, carbon, sulfur, and other substances.

Concentrated sulfuric acid is also a strong dehydrating agent, combining violently with water. When combined with water, this acid will char many organic materials, such as wood, paper, or sugar, leaving a carbonaceous residue.

This acid is one of the most vital compounds the chemical industry produces. Industrial uses of sulfuric acid are immeasurable. Manufacturers of many chemicals use sulfuric acid to manufacture their products, including hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, sulfate salts, artificial detergents, dyes and pigments, explosives, and drugs.

Some call this the king of chemicals. Manufacturers use sulfuric acid to make hundreds of compounds needed in almost every industry.

Sulfuric Acid Functions:

  • pH adjustment
  • Waste and potable water treatment
  • Metal finishing
  • Mining and smelting
  • RO regen
  • Remove scale from irrigation lines
  • Battery acid
  • Fertilizer
  • Detergent
  • Chemical manufacturing
  • Manufacturing of phosphoric acid and other products
  • Manufacture of paints, plastics, and dyes

Industries Use Sulfuric Acid for These Applications:

  • Fertilizer producers are the largest users of sulfuric acid, using it as a component of phosphoric acid to create phosphate fertilizers, calcium dihydrogenphosphate, and ammonium phosphates
  • Chemical manufacturers for making hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, phosphoric acid, and more
  • Crude oil refiners use this acid as a catalyst
  • Detergent manufacturers for sulfonating the active organic ingredients used in making synthetic detergents
  • Textile manufacturers to make rayon
  • Battery manufacturers (especially in the automotive industry) as an electrolyte to allow the flow of electrons between the battery’s plates
  • Agriculture for drying  out the tops of plants for easier harvesting (such as potato farming)
  • Medical manufacturers (especially chemotherapy drug manufacturers) to manufacture the drugs that attack the DNA of cancer cells
  • Water treatment processes inject sulfuric acid into the RO feed to lower the pH
  • In the production of ethanol fuels and petrochemicals
